Your piercing survival guide for summer

Pool days, SPF chaos, airport trays — we've got the answers so your piercings can have just as much fun as you do.

🌊 Swimming — the real talk

Okay, summer and piercings can absolutely coexist — but water is where things get tricky. Pools are full of chlorine, oceans carry bacteria, and lakes? Let's just say they're a free-for-all of microbes.

The golden rule: if your piercing is super fresh, keep it out of communal water. Fresh piercings are essentially open wounds, and submerging them is basically an open invitation for infection. Use a waterproof wound-seal bandage (like Tegaderm) over fresh piercings if you absolutely need to take the plunge, and rinse with sterile saline spray immediately after any water exposure.

Healed piercings and the ocean: Saltwater is actually naturally cleansing, so a quick ocean swim is usually fine. Just rinse with fresh water after so the salt doesn't dry out the skin around your jewelry.

☀️ Sunscreen without the drama

Sunscreen is non-negotiable in summer, but the wrong application around your piercings can cause irritation, product build-up, and even delay healing. The good news: a little mindfulness goes a long way.

✦ Apply sunscreen before putting on dangling earrings — this keeps the product off your jewelry and out of the piercing channel.

✦ Use mineral-based sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) around facial piercings — they're less likely to contain irritating alcohols or fragrances.

✦ If sunscreen does get into the piercing site, do a saline rinse as soon as possible.

Nose and cartilage piercing owners: Spray sunscreens are your nemesis — the mist gets everywhere. Stick to lotion applied with a fingertip and work around the piercing carefully.

✈️ Travel like a pro

From airport security to humidity changes and different water quality — travel throws a lot at your piercings. A little prep makes the whole trip smoother.

New tap water — Water mineral content varies wildly by destination. Bring a travel-sized sterile saline spray to keep cleaning consistent everywhere.

Humidity shifts — Dry airplane cabin air can irritate healing piercings. Do a quick saline spray before and after your flight.

Your kit — Pack a small pouch: saline spray, a spare stud or flat-back in your size, and a tiny mirror.

One more thing: don't change your jewelry right before or during travel. New jewelry + a long journey + irregular cleaning schedules = a recipe for irritation. Wait until you're settled.
